Cloze Test - NDA English NotesCloze Test (Fill in the Paragraph Blanks)
A Cloze Test is a paragraph or passage with several words removed. You are required to read the passage and select the most appropriate word from the given options to fill in each blank. It tests your vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, and reading comprehension simultaneously.
🎯 Objective: To understand the overall context and tone of the passage and apply grammar rules (subject-verb agreement, prepositions, tenses) to select the word that makes the sentence logically and grammatically correct.
Core Strategies to Master the Cloze Test
1. Read the Passage Before Looking at Options
Do a quick initial read of the entire paragraph without trying to fill in the blanks. This helps you grasp the central theme, the tone (positive, negative, informative, sarcastic?), and the tense (past, present, future) of the passage. This context is crucial for eliminating wrong options.
2. Identify the Tone
If the passage is discussing a disaster (negative tone), the word filling the blank will likely be negative (e.g., 'devastated' instead of 'developed'). If it's about a scientific discovery (informative/positive), look for neutral or positive words.
3. Look at the Surrounding Words (Forward & Backward Reading)
The words immediately preceding and following the blank offer massive clues.
- Prepositions: Often specific verbs/adjectives take specific prepositions (e.g., 'accused of', 'interested in'). If the text has "He was accused (1)_____ theft," and the options are (with/of/by/for), 'of' is the only grammatically correct choice.
- Articles: If the blank follows an 'an', the answer must start with a vowel sound (e.g., "an (2)_____ apple").
- Conjunctions: Words like 'and', 'but', 'although' show the relationship. 'And' joins similar ideas; 'but' joins contrasting ideas.
4. Grammar & Part of Speech
Determine what part of speech is missing. Is it a Noun, Verb, Adjective, or Adverb?
Example: "The lion roared (3)______." You need an Adverb here (e.g., loudly, fiercely). If the options are (loud / loudly / loudness), "loudly" is the only fit.
5. Elimination Method
Often, two options might seem correct based on meaning. Use grammar and context to eliminate the less suitable one. Cross out options that are grammatically incorrect in the sentence structure.
Detailed Example Analysis
Example Passage
The rapid growth of cities (1)1 led to numerous environmental issues. As concrete jungles expand, they encroach (2)2 surrounding forests and wetlands. This systematic destruction of natural habitats has a (3)3 impact on local wildlife populations. Many species find themselves completely (4)4 of their homes and food sources. Consequently, environmentalists are urging governments to (5)5 stricter conservation laws before the damage becomes irreversible.
Blank (1): The rapid growth of cities (1)_____ led to numerous environmental issues.
Options: (a) has / (b) have / (c) having / (d) had
Analysis: Look at the subject. The subject is "The rapid growth" (singular noun phrase), not "cities". Therefore, the verb must be singular ("has"). The sentence describes a current state resulting from a past action (Present Perfect).
Answer: (a) has
Blank (2): As concrete jungles expand, they encroach (2)_____ surrounding forests...
Options: (a) in / (b) at / (c) upon / (d) with
Analysis: This is a preposition question. The verb "encroach" correctly takes the preposition 'upon' or 'on'. "Encroach upon" means to intrude on someone's territory or rights.
Answer: (c) upon
Blank (3): This systematic destruction of natural habitats has a (3)_____ impact on local wildlife...
Options: (a) devastating / (b) developed / (c) delightful / (d) minimal
Analysis: The tone is negative due to "systematic destruction". We need a strong negative adjective. 'developed' makes no sense. 'delightful' and 'minimal' contradict the negative tone. 'devastating' (highly destructive) fits perfectly conceptually and grammatically.
Answer: (a) devastating
Blank (4): Many species find themselves completely (4)_____ of their homes and food sources.
Options: (a) full / (b) deprived / (c) provided / (d) devoid
Analysis: The phrase means they have lost their homes. Both 'deprived' and 'devoid' usually take the preposition 'of'. However, 'devoid of' means lacking something naturally entirely, while 'deprived of' means having something taken away. Since they lost their habitats due to destruction, 'deprived' is the better fit contextually.
Answer: (b) deprived
Blank (5): ...urging governments to (5)_____ stricter conservation laws...
Options: (a) implement / (b) cancel / (c) ignore / (d) break
Analysis: The context is environmentalists wanting action "before the damage becomes irreversible." They would urge governments to create or enforce laws, not cancel, ignore, or break them. 'Implement' (put into effect) is the logical choice.
Answer: (a) implement
Common Vocabulary Themes to Study
- Collocations: Words that naturally go together (e.g., "pay attention", "commit a crime", "make an effort").
- Phrasal Verbs: Verbs combined with a preposition (e.g., "give up", "look forward to", "break down").
- Fixed Prepositions: Adjectives/Verbs followed by specific prepositions (e.g., "accused of", "addicted to", "good at", "afraid of").

1 havoc on this delicate system. One of the most prevalent issues today is chronic fatigue, a condition where individuals feel constantly exhausted (2)
2 getting adequate amounts of sleep. Doctors frequently advise patients to (3)
3 a balanced diet rich in vitamins and to incorporate regular physical exercise into their routines. Furthermore, they emphasize the importance of hydration, noting that even mild dehydration can significantly (4)
4 a person's cognitive abilities and mood. Ultimately, prioritizing self-care is not a luxury, but an absolute (5)
5 for maintaining long-term health and well-being.
The idiom is "wreak havoc", meaning to cause great damage or disruption.
"Despite" is a preposition showing contrast (exhausted vs adequate sleep) and is followed by a gerund phrase ("getting..."). "Although" would require a full clause ("although they get...").
You "adopt a diet". While you consume food, you adopt the dietary practice itself.
Dehydration is negative, so it would "impair" (weaken or damage) cognitive abilities.
The sentence contrasts "luxury" with its opposite requirement: "necessity".
Passage 2
The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century is widely regarded as one of the most pivotal moments in human history. Prior to its (6)
6, books were meticulously copied by hand, a process that was incredibly slow and enormously expensive. Consequently, knowledge was largely (7)
7 to the wealthy elite and the clergy. Gutenberg's machine drastically changed this dynamic by allowing for the mass production of texts. As books became more affordable and widespread, literacy rates across Europe began to (8)
8. This sudden democratization of information fueled the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution, as scholars could finally (9)
9 their ideas rapidly across vast distances. Unquestionably, the printing press laid the intellectual (10)
10 for the modern world.
"Advent" means the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event (the printing press).
Because books were expensive, knowledge was limited or "confined" to the elite.

Passage 4
Mount Everest, the highest peak on Earth, has long been a symbol of ultimate human endurance and adventure. For decades, experienced mountaineers have flocked to the Himalayas to (16)
16 the mighty mountain. However, in recent times, the commercialization of expeditions has transformed climbing Everest into a highly lucrative industry. Consequently, the mountain has witnessed severe overcrowding, leading to dangerous "traffic jams" in the perilous "Death Zone." In this treacherous area above 8,000 meters, oxygen levels are (17)
17 low, and every minute spent waiting in line significantly increases the risk of frostbite or altitude sickness. Moreover, the surge in climbers has resulted in massive amounts of garbage, including discarded oxygen cylinders and torn tents, severely polluting the pristine environment. Environmental organizations are now demanding stricter regulations, urging the government to severely (18)
18 the number of climbing permits issued annually. Without immediate and drastic intervention, the very beauty that (19)
19 climbers to the mountain may soon be (20)
20 completely.
Mountaineers go there to climb the peak successfully, which is to "conquer" it.
In the "Death Zone", oxygen levels are dangerously or "critically" low.
To solve overcrowding, organizations demand to limit or "restrict" the number of permits.
The beauty of the mountain draws or "attracts" climbers to it.
Due to the severe pollution mentioned, the beauty may soon be "destroyed".

NDA 2021 In fiction, you experience situations without the real-world negative outcomes or "consequences".
NDA 2021 The ability to decipher emotions is a very positive trait, making it "valuable" in relationships and work.
NDA 2021 Short-form content causes attention spans to get shorter, so it is damaging or "eroding" them.
NDA 2021 Empathy and understanding others lead to human "connection".
Passage 4 (Based on NDA 2019)
The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is arguably the most critical challenge of the 21st century. Fossil fuels, primarily coal, oil, and natural gas, have been the undisputed (16)
16 of global industrialization for over a century. However, the burning of these fuels releases massive quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is the primary driver of catastrophic climate change. Fortunately, technological advancements have drastically reduced the cost of solar and wind power, making them (17)
17 alternatives in many regions. Despite these economic improvements, entirely abandoning fossil fuels remains a heavily (18)
18 issue. Critics point out that renewable energy sources are often intermittent—the sun doesn't always shine, and the wind doesn't always blow. Therefore, heavily relying on them without significant advancements in battery storage technology could lead to severe power (19)
19. Thus, many experts advocate for a gradual transition, utilizing cleaner fossil fuels like natural gas as a temporary (20)
20 until renewable infrastructure is fully reliable.
NDA 2019 Fossil fuels have driven or powered global industrialization, acting as its "engines".
NDA 2019 Because the cost has reduced drastically, solar and wind are now practical or "viable" alternatives.
NDA 2019 Because critics bring up problems (intermittency), entirely abandoning fuels is a heavily argued or "debated" issue.
