Ordering of Words

Notes - Ordering of Words - NDA English

Ordering of Words (PQRS)

In this section, a sentence is broken down into four parts labeled P, Q, R, and S. These parts are jumbled, and you must rearrange them into a meaningful and grammatically correct sentence by choosing the correct sequence from the options provided. This is a very high-scoring section if you master basic grammar rules and logical sentence structuring.

Core Concept: Every English sentence generally follows a strict structure:
Subject + Verb + Object + Compliment/Modifier (Time, Place, Manner).

Key Strategies to Solve PQRS

  • Find the Subject First: Almost every sentence starts with a Noun, Pronoun, or a Gerund (V1+ing). Look for the part that introduces the 'doer' of the action or the main focus of the sentence.
  • The Subject-Verb Link: Once you locate the subject (e.g., in part Q), immediately find the verb that agrees with it (e.g., in part S). This instantly gives you a mandatory pair (QS). Look for 'QS' in the options to eliminate wrong choices.
  • Connecting Conjunctions: Words like and, but, because, although, yet, therefore, however act as strong bridges between two clauses. A part ending with 'and' must connect to a part starting with a similar grammatical structure (parallelism).
  • Prepositions & Articles: A part ending with an article (a, an, the) must be followed by a noun. A part ending in a preposition (in, on, at, for) must be followed by its object (noun/pronoun).
Example: "He went to (P) / the market (Q)" -> P links exactly to Q.
  • Relative Pronouns: Words like who, which, that, whom, whose must generally be placed immediately after the noun they refer to (their antecedent).
Example: "The boy (R) / who is wearing a red shirt (P)" -> RP is a pair.

Understanding Through Examples

Example 1:
P: to protect the environment Q: the government took R: strict measures S: from pollution
Options: (a) Q R P S    (b) Q R S P    (c) P R Q S    (d) S P R Q
Analysis:
1. Who is taking the action? 'the government'. So, Q sounds like the perfect starting subject.
2. Look for the verb. "The government took..." What did they take? "strict measures". So, Q links to R. (Pair QR).
3. Why did they take measures? "to protect the environment". So, R links to P. (Pair QRP).
4. Protect from what? "from pollution". So, P links to S.
Correct Sequence: Q R P S -> "The government took strict measures to protect the environment from pollution." (Option A)
Example 2:
P: a great leader Q: who always fought R: for the poor S: Mahatma Gandhi was
Options: (a) S P Q R    (b) S Q P R    (c) P S Q R    (d) Q R S P
Analysis:
1. The sentence must begin with a proper noun/subject. 'Mahatma Gandhi' (S).
2. 'was' needs a compliment. Who was he? 'a great leader' (P). Pair SP.
3. The relative pronoun 'who' (Q) must come immediately after the noun it describes ('leader'). So, P connects to Q. Pair SPQ.
4. Fought for whom? 'for the poor' (R).
Correct Sequence: S P Q R -> "Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader who always fought for the poor." (Option A)
