Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension tests your ability to read a passage, understand its main idea, and answer questions based on it.
1. Approaches to Solve RC
A. The 'Questions First' Approach
- Read the questions before reading the passage.
- This helps you know what to look for (keywords, names, dates).
- Especially useful for factual passages or long passages.
B. The 'Passage First' Approach
- Read the passage quickly (skim) to get the gist.
- Then read the questions and refer back to specific sections.
- Better for inference-based or abstract passages.
2. Key Strategies
- Skimming: Read quickly to get the general idea/theme. Don't stop at every difficult word.
- Scanning: Search for specific information (keywords from questions).
- Elimination: Use the process of elimination. If an option contradicts the passage or is not mentioned, discard it.
- Stick to the Passage: Do not use your outside knowledge. Answer only based on what is written.
- Identify Structure: Notice transition words (however, therefore) to understand the flow of arguments.
3. Types of Questions
Practice Passage 1
Passage: Education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge; it is a tool for self-empowerment. It enables individuals to think critically, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to society. However, the current education system often prioritizes rote learning over creativity.
