Reading Comprehension

Reading Comprehension tests your ability to read a passage, understand its main idea, and answer questions based on it.

1. Approaches to Solve RC

A. The 'Questions First' Approach

  • Read the questions before reading the passage.
  • This helps you know what to look for (keywords, names, dates).
  • Especially useful for factual passages or long passages.

B. The 'Passage First' Approach

  • Read the passage quickly (skim) to get the gist.
  • Then read the questions and refer back to specific sections.
  • Better for inference-based or abstract passages.

2. Key Strategies

  • Skimming: Read quickly to get the general idea/theme. Don't stop at every difficult word.
  • Scanning: Search for specific information (keywords from questions).
  • Elimination: Use the process of elimination. If an option contradicts the passage or is not mentioned, discard it.
  • Stick to the Passage: Do not use your outside knowledge. Answer only based on what is written.
  • Identify Structure: Notice transition words (however, therefore) to understand the flow of arguments.

3. Types of Questions

Main Idea / Title: What is the central theme? (Usually found in the first or last paragraph).
Direct / Factual: Answers are directly in the text (Who, When, Where).
Inference Based: Answers are implied, not directly stated. ("What does the author imply...").
Vocabulary Based: Synonyms/Antonyms of words in context.
Tone: The author's attitude (Critical, Optimistic, Neutral, Sarcastic).
