Silk Road
By Nick Middleton • A Pilgrimage into the Clouds
The author, Nick Middleton, aims to complete the Kora (sacred pilgrimage) around Mount Kailash. The story follows his path from Ravu across the high-altitude Tibetan plateau, documenting the physical and mental challenges of the voyage.
Ravu: The starting point. Lhamo gives Middleton a long-sleeved sheepskin coat to protect him from the extreme cold.
Hor: A town on the shore of Lake Manasarovar. Contrary to its holy reputation, Middleton finds Hor grim, dusty, and full of refuse.
Darchen: The base camp for Mount Kailash. Here, Middleton suffers from severe altitude sickness and blocked sinuses.
- Tsetan: The reliable Tibetan driver who navigated the snow-covered mountain passes with skill and practical Buddhist optimism.
- Norbu: A Tibetan academic from Beijing. He was Middleton's "ideal companion" because he also wanted to do the Kora but wasn't a "pious" pilgrim, making the journey less heavy and more conversational.
Drokbas: Nomadic shepherds living in solitary tents with their fierce Tibetan Mastiffs.
Cairn of Rocks: Piles of stones at mountain passes, often decorated with prayer flags to seek blessings for the journey.

[ TRAVELOGUE & ADVENTURE ANALYSIS ]
The landscape is . It is a high-altitude desert-like plateau with sparse vegetation, home to gazelles and herds of 'Kyang' (wild asses). The area is silent and solitary, with only nomad shepherds (Drokbas) inhabiting the space.
The author had expected Hor to be a Holy and Scenic town near Lake Manasarovar. Instead, he found it to be a collection of shacks built in a dusty, polluted wasteland. This highlights the gap between religious idealization and the harsh reality of neglected outposts.
Tsetan was worried that Middleton's death would be Bad for Business. He viewed the situation practically as a driver and a Buddhist. He ensures Middleton gets treatment at the Tibetan Medical College to avoid any tragedy that would ruin the trip's reputation.
Middleton felt lonely in Darchen as there were no other English-speaking pilgrims. Norbu’s arrival shared the burden. Norbu was a scholar who could communicate in English, and like Middleton, he was a first-time pilgrim who wasn't overly religious, making him a relatable partner.
These are Fierce Guard Dogs. They are so aggressive that they were once exported to China as royal guards. They would chase the author's car with terrifying speed, acting as effective protectors for the nomads' tents.
