Resources

Resources - Long Answer Questions

Q1. What is a 'Resource'?

Anything that can be used to satisfy a need. Water, electricity, rickshaw, vegetable, and textbook are all resources because they have 'utility'.

Q2. What is 'Utility'?

Utility or usability is what makes an object or substance a resource. It gives it value.

Q3. What is 'Value'?

Value means worth. Some resources have economic value (metals), some do not (a beautiful landscape), but both are important and satisfy human needs.

Q4. What are the two factors that change substances into resources?

Time and Technology. Example: Fire discovery led to cooking. Wheel invention led to transport. Water + Tech = Hydroelectricity.

Q5. What are 'Natural Resources'?

Resources drawn from nature and used without much modification (air, water, soil, minerals).

Q6. What are 'Renewable Resources'?

Resources that get renewed or replenished quickly (Solar, Wind). Some like water/forests can affect stock if misused.

Q7. What are 'Non-renewable Resources'?

Resources with a limited stock. Once exhausted, they take thousands of years to renew (Coal, Petroleum, Natural Gas).

Q8. What are 'Human Made Resources'?

Resources created by humans using natural substances (Buildings, Bridges, Roads, Machinery, Vehicles). Technology is also a human-made resource.

Q9. Who are 'Human Resources'?

People. Education and health help in making people a valuable resource. Humans use knowledge to create more resources.

Q10. What is 'Resource Conservation'?

Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed.

Q11. What is 'Sustainable Development'?

Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future. Meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Q12. What are the 3 principles of Sustainable Development?

1. Respect and care for all forms of life. 2. Improve quality of human life. 3. Conserve earth's vitality and diversity.

Q13. What is 'Patent'?

The exclusive right over any idea or invention.

Q14. What is 'Stock of Resource'?

The amount of resources available for use.

Q15. How are resources distributed?

Unequally over the earth, depending on physical factors like terrain, climate, and altitude.

Q16. What is 'Ubiquitous' resource?

Resources found everywhere (Air).

Q17. What is 'Localized' resource?

Resources found only in certain places (Copper, Iron ore).

Q18. Why are Human Resources important?

Because humans can make the best use of nature to create more resources with their knowledge and skill.

Q19. What is HRD?

Human Resource Development. Improving the quality of people's skills so they can create more resources.

Q20. What is the difference between potential and actual resources?

Potential: quantity not known, not being used currently (Uranium in Ladakh). Actual: quantity known, being used currently (Coal in Ruhr).
